Thursday Night was a very special and bitter-sweet occasion. To see all of the local leadership and members of the Florida Senate, stand in the presence of greatness, my uncle Maxwell and Aunt Irene Johnson, founders of the African American Museum of Art. Each echoed the same message; that it was very sad to be saying goodbye to such a dynamic duo. But holy to murkertory Batman we know that they leave the community of Deland better off culturally. However as a result of this retirement they have the chance to enjoy that hard earned pension, and to travel the seven seas living out their story book fantasies under the big chiffon tree eating cocoa nuts and bananas.
The African American Museum of the Arts was founded in 1994 by Irene D. Johnson who had long envisioned a place for African American artists to display their works year round. Johnson wanted to create a place that would shape the thinking of young African Americans in a positive and self affirming manner. Therefore, they have created and leave to the city of Deland and surrounding communities, a legacy. Without them here as caretakers, this organization will feel the emptiness of their absence.
Nevertheless, I know something about retirement. And what I want to say to you Uncle Max and Aunt Irene, is that all those gifts you received, this dinner, Social Security and pension, and none of these super amenities mean a gosh darn thing. What means something, what really means something, Uncle Max and Aunt Irene is that you have devoted your life to something meaningful, that add culture to an otherwise productively fine community. Now at the end of the day you can look back and say; I’ve made a difference and that’s something better than money. Now we shall retire to live “The life of Reilly”!
Everything was wonderful; God Speed ahead. We love you
